Gaisce / President’s Awards At Colaiste Iosagain , Portarlington .

During the recent spell of very fine weather , a group of students , some sunburnt and all exhausted , arrived back on the school grounds one day around lunchtime . They had just completed a 25 kilometre (16 mile) hike and overnight camp in the Slieve Bloom mountains .Accompanied by Gaisce co-ordinator , Glen Brennan and colleagues , Mairead Bergin and Conor Mitchell, the group had a terrific time ,the culmination of a year long effort to reach the ‘ Bronze ‘ standard at the prestigious Gaisce / President’s Awards .Each participant had to complete thirteen weeks of a ‘Communtiy Challenge’ , eg volunteering for a local charity , thirteen weeks of a ‘Personal Challenge ‘ , eg skill/hobby and thirteen weeks of a ‘ Physical/Sporting Challenge ‘ .Also one of these three had to be ‘doubled’ to twenty six weeks !The ‘Adventure Challenge ‘ involved the overnight camp and marathon hike .Sixteen students reached this gruelling standard and many plan to go on to aim for the ‘Silver’ standard next year .As well as being a major boost to their CVs the students had a brilliant time completing the challenge during the year .
