Cycle Against Suicide

One of Colaiste Iosagain , Portarlington’s biggest mental health initiatives in recent years has been the Cycle Against Suicide .Despite the name this is not an exclusively bicycling group although an annual cycle does take place .Fifth Year , Sarah Keenan has been selected from over two hundred schools’ nominees throughout the country to be one of only thirteen national student leader ambassadors for the organisation .Sarah wrote an essay to win her place .As part of her induction she went on a two day retreat to Kippure to participate in rock climbing and other outdoor pursuits along with talks in the evenings .A workshop with Kayleigh Cullinane from Operation Transformation was one of the most memorable of these .
The Cycle Against Suicide group organise an annual Wellness Week , last year’s had the theme ‘Share the Journey’ .Some of their activities included painting orange footsteps around the school with positive messages , making a short film and putting up posters .The ‘Tree of Positivity’ had students’ wishes for the future attached while the ‘Pack Your Parachute ‘ initiative was meant to make students aware of their circle of support e.g. parents , teachers etc .

Paul Flint is one of eleven Sixth Year Meitheal team members and
Chairman of the group in the school Eighty Fifth Years applied for these positions .They have weekly meetings .
Making sure First Years are comfortable and happy is their main role .Some of the activities they organise include table quizzes , indoor soccer leagues and movies .In recognition of their great work there is an annual Meitheal graduation event in Naas every April
