LCVP in Colaiste Iosagain

 

Background


-          The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme was introduced nationally in 1994 in response to the challenge placed on Ireland’s education system by a changing work and business environment.


-          The primary goal of the LCVP is to prepare young people for adult life by ensuring that they are educated in the broadest sense with an ability to cope thrive in an environment of rapid change.


-          Students taking the LCVP as an addition to the Leaving Certificate Established undertake two link modules during one double class a week


1)                  Preparation for the World of Work

2)                  Enterprise



Points Awarded

 

The Link Modules may be used as one of the six Leaving Certificate subjects when calculating points for the Institutes of Technologies and the Universities.

            Merit                           65-79%                        50 Points

            Pass                             50-64%                        30 Points


Assessment


            Written Examination               40%    

            Portfolio of Coursework         60%


-          The written examination is held in May of the Leaving Certificate Year.

-          The portfolio is assembled over two years and is submitted one week prior to the May exam.

Link Module Activities Currently in Place in Colaiste Iosagain


Over the two years of the programme the students:


  • Prepare a Curriculum Vitae.


  • Undertake a Career Investigation


  • Engage in Work Shadowing


  • Take part in an Enterprise/Fundraising activity.  For example:         


  •  
    • Jump For Joy in aid of Crumlin Hospital
    • Tesco Computers for Schools
    • HB Ice-Cream Day in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland


  • Visit Local Enterprises.  For example: Polar Ice, Siac, Riverside Furniture


  • Arrange Visits In from local entrepreneurs


  • Do mock interviews with a representative of our local AIB bank


  • Investigate their local area


  • Arrange Visits In from local community development organizations including Portarlington Development Project and St Vincent de Paul


  • Type up a portfolio on the above using Information Technology


Programme Requirements

 

All students who satisfy the programme requirements are offered a place on the LCVP programme.  In order to qualify students must:


-          Study at least five Leaving Certificate subjects including Irish.

-          Study a modern European language.

-          Have two of the qualifying subjects from the designated subject groupings.

27 of the 41 Colaiste Iosagain students who took the LCVP in 2007 used it as one of the 6 subjects in the calculation of their points.
