The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP)

LCVP is an extra subject provided in Colaiste Íosagain that can be taken at Leaving Certificate level. It is designed to give a strong vocational dimension to the Leaving Certificate Established (LCE)

LCVP is run as a one-hour class per week. It is run alongside the normal Leaving Certificate subjects. LCVP students have access to I.T. during class time. Over the two years, students will focus on self-directed learning, enterprise, work and the community.

Topics that may be covered include Creating a C.V., A Career Investigation, Work experience/shadowing, Mock Interviews, visits out to an enterprise/business, visit in from a local business person, planning an enterprise.

Programme Requirements

LCVP students

  • must take a minimum of five Leaving Certificate subjects (at Higher, Ordinary or Foundation Level) including Irish. Students who are exempt from studying Irish, must take additional subject(s) to ensure that they present a minimum of five Leaving Certificate subjects in their Leaving Certificate examination.
  • must study the two Link Modules, namely Preparation for the World of Work and Enterprise education.

Note: The requirement to have certain link subjects and a European language no longer applies as of the school year 22/23.

Admission to the LCVP Programme

Each year the Board of Management will sanction the number of classes depending on the schools' resources. Students can apply after an information giving session. Should the number interested exceed the number of places allocated by the board, it will be decided by a lottery system.

LCVP Assessment

LCVP students are assessed in two ways

(a) The production of a portfolio worth 60% of their overall grade, which is posted to the Department of Education for examination in March of year 2.

(b) A written exam worth 40% carried out in May of year 2.

Certification

On their Leaving Certificate results, students will be awarded one of the following in their LCVP

80-100%

66 points

MERIT

65-79%

48 points

PASS

50-64%

28 points
